Telus Sky, Commercial office skyscraper in downtown Calgary, Canada
Telus Sky is a 222-meter-tall office tower in downtown Calgary with a rectangular base that tapers over 60 floors, creating balconies and terraces along the way. The building blends office space, residential apartments, and ground-level retail that connects to the city's Plus 15 elevated walkway system.
Construction started in 2015 after Telus Corporation announced the project, replacing an older building that had occupied the site before. This development marked a turning point in how the downtown area was being rebuilt and modernized.
The north and south sides feature an LED art installation called Northern Lights by Douglas Coupland that lights up the building with shifting patterns. This kind of public art has become an important part of how the city looks and feels to people visiting or working downtown.
The tower is easily reached through the Plus 15 system, a network of elevated walkways connecting downtown buildings at the second-floor level. Keep in mind that office areas are private, but ground-level shops and public spaces are freely accessible to walk through.
The building uses an advanced ventilation system with thermal storage that captures temperature differences to reduce energy use. While these engineering features stay hidden behind the scenes, they're a key reason why it functions as a responsible piece of modern architecture.
