4 Lazy F Dude Ranch, United States historic place
The 4 Lazy F Ranch is a dude ranch near Moose, Wyoming, situated on the west side of the Snake River at about 6,530 feet elevation with views of Teton peaks rising over 13,000 feet. The property includes a main lodge built by the Frew family in the 1920s, three original guest cabins from that era, two additional smaller cabins added in the 1960s, a large square-log barn from the early 1900s, a garage building, and various outbuildings, all constructed with local wood in straightforward mountain style.
Bryant Mears claimed the land around 1914 and built simple structures including a house and barns on the 135-acre property, though he did not stay long. The Frew family purchased it in 1921, constructed the main lodge and guest cabins during the 1920s, and began accepting paying visitors in the 1950s, transforming it into a working dude ranch. Emily Frew Oliver sold the ranch to the federal government in 1967, after which Grand Teton National Park assumed management.
The ranch takes its name from the Frew family, who purchased and developed it in the 1920s, with 4 Lazy F standing for four lazy Frews. This family legacy remains visible today in how the buildings cluster around the lodge and how the landscape still reflects their choices about where to live and gather.
The ranch sits on the west side of the Snake River just north of Grand Teton National Park's main area, making it convenient to visit while exploring the park. The buildings are spread across the property and are best explored on foot, with gentle terrain and clear views of the surrounding mountains and river making navigation straightforward.
Each guest cabin originally had its own small outhouse hidden deep in the woods, reflecting the rustic infrastructure of early mountain ranches. These details reveal how guests were accommodated in isolation and comfort developed gradually over the decades as the property evolved.
