High Level Bridge Streetcar, Heritage streetcar in Edmonton, Canada
The High Level Bridge Streetcar is a heritage streetcar that runs between Whyte Avenue and Jasper Plaza, crossing the North Saskatchewan River on a historic steel bridge. The route travels through a tunnel before reaching the bridge that spans the river valley.
Streetcar service was restarted in 1979 by the Edmonton Radial Railway Society using restored cars, including a 1912 model and a car brought from Osaka. The tunnel on the bridge was originally built as part of the Canadian Pacific Railway mainline and remains a distinctive railway feature of the area.
At the Strathcona terminus, you can explore a modest museum displaying photographs and objects from Edmonton's transit past. The collection shows how important streetcars once were to the city's everyday life and how people traveled before cars took over.
The streetcar operates only during the warmer months from May through October, so plan your visit accordingly. You can buy tickets directly from the conductor using cash, making it easy to board when you arrive.
The ride passes through a tunnel that is one of only a few original railway tunnel sections ever built beneath a Canadian Pacific Railway mainline in Alberta. This rarity makes the journey through this passage something you won't find anywhere else in the region.
