Canadian National Railways 6060, Steam locomotive in Stettler, Canada
Canadian National Railways 6060 is a 4-8-2 Mountain-type steam locomotive based in Stettler, Alberta, as part of the Alberta Prairie Railway operation. It is displayed alongside other historical railway equipment and still runs on excursion trips during the operating season.
This locomotive was built in 1944 by the Montreal Locomotive Works and hauled passengers and freight for Canadian National Railways until 1959. After retirement, it passed through different hands before finding a permanent home in Stettler.
The locomotive is nicknamed "The Big Snort" and still pulls excursion trains across the Alberta prairie today. Riding behind it gives a sense of travel that feels nothing like a modern train journey.
The site is open during the operating season, so it is worth checking ahead before planning your visit. The Alberta prairie weather can change quickly, so dressing in layers is a good idea when riding or exploring outdoors.
An engineer named Harry Home bought this locomotive in 1962 for just one dollar to keep it from being scrapped. Without that single-dollar transaction, the engine would almost certainly not exist today.
