High Park, Urban park in Toronto, Canada
High Park is an urban park in Toronto, Canada, covering 161 hectares with forest areas, ponds, gardens, and sports facilities. The grounds show different terrain from flat meadows to wooded slopes.
John George Howard gifted this land to Toronto in 1876 under the condition it remain a public park. His donation laid the foundation for one of the city's oldest recreation spaces.
The name honors the elevated plateau above Bloor Street that once drew early walkers. Families gather today beneath cherry trees that bloom in pink and white each spring.
Several entrances lead into the grounds, with High Park and Keele subway stations on the Bloor-Danforth line offering direct access. Paths run through the park and connect different areas.
The grounds preserve a rare oak savannah ecosystem with black oaks and native grasses that once covered much of southern Ontario. This plant community continues to develop without human intervention.
