Alldritt Tower, Mixed-use skyscraper in downtown Edmonton, Canada.
Alldritt Tower is a mixed-use skyscraper in downtown Edmonton, Canada, combining residential units, hotel rooms, and retail spaces within a single glass-clad structure. The lower floors house hotel accommodations and shops, while the upper portion of the building is devoted to private residences.
The site where the tower was built sits above ground that was mined for coal over 100 years ago, which created unusual conditions for construction. The presence of old mine workings underground influenced how the entire project was planned from the start.
Alldritt Tower stands out along the Edmonton skyline and signals a shift in how the city's downtown is being reshaped by new construction. Walking nearby, visitors can see how the area is moving away from older low-rise blocks toward a denser, more vertical urban form.
Because this is a mixed-use building, many areas are reserved for residents and hotel guests, so public access is limited to the lobby and retail spaces. Visiting during the day when shops are open gives the best opportunity to pass through and get a sense of the building.
To stabilize the ground, engineers injected concrete into the old mine cavities below the site before construction could begin. This process, invisible from street level, was essential to making the building structurally safe.
