World Waterpark, Indoor water park in West Edmonton Mall, Canada
World Waterpark is an indoor water park located inside West Edmonton Mall, covering more than 20,000 square meters and featuring 17 different waterslides along with the largest covered wave pool in North America. The entire area is divided into several zones, including a shallow section for children, a central basin for swimmers, and tall slide towers that launch from different points.
The park opened in April 1986 as part of what was then the world's largest shopping center, bringing tropical leisure to Edmonton's cold winters. Since then, several slides have been added and renewed, though the core layout remains intact to this day.
The name reflects the ambition to bring together water park attractions from around the world under a single roof. On weekends and school holidays, families from across Alberta gather to splash together and ride the slides.
Water is kept at a steady 31 degrees Celsius (around 88 Fahrenheit), so you can swim comfortably even when January temperatures outside drop far below freezing. Life jackets are available at no charge, while larger tubes for certain slides require a rental fee.
The Blue Thunder wave pool holds 12.5 million liters of water and generates waves up to 1.5 meters (roughly 5 feet) tall using four hydraulic pumping systems. Every twenty minutes, a wave sequence begins, shifting the water from calm to gentle rocking and then to powerful rolling.
