Elmore City, Small town in Garvin County, United States
Elmore City is a small town in southwestern Garvin County located where State Highways 74 and 29 intersect. The town sits at an elevation of 297 meters and covers approximately 2.6 square kilometers of land.
The settlement started in the 1880s when Jasper N. Black opened a general store at a crossroads location. The town was formally incorporated in 1898 and later developed through oil field activities in the region.
The town became known when local students challenged a decades-long prohibition on public dancing in the 1980s, an event that later inspired the movie Footloose. This moment shaped how residents see themselves and draws visitors interested in this piece of popular culture history.
The town has elementary and high schools within the Elmore City-Pernell school district for families considering the area. Its location at the junction of two state highways makes it easy to access and navigate through.
During the 1920s, the town became a central supplier for the oil industry when petroleum field developments expanded in the area. This industrial growth transformed what started as a trading post into a regional energy hub.
