Will Rogers World Airport, Regional commercial airport in Oklahoma City, United States
Will Rogers World Airport is a commercial airport southwest of Oklahoma City that includes three concourses and seventeen boarding gates. The facility sits amid agricultural land and connects the state with many destinations across the country.
The site served as a municipal airfield starting in 1911 for early aviation pioneers and changed its name in 1941. Authorities expanded the infrastructure gradually over the following decades to accommodate growing flight traffic.
The airport bears the name of Will Rogers, an Oklahoma-born entertainer and writer who died in a plane crash in Alaska. Travelers find occasional small exhibits about regional aviation history inside the main terminal.
The main terminal sits roughly 6 miles (10 kilometers) from downtown Oklahoma City and is reachable via several major highways. Arriving passengers find car rental desks and ground transport options in the lower level of the terminal.
On the western side of the airport grounds, the federal aviation administration operates a large training and research center for air traffic controllers. Many of the professionals monitoring flight operations across the country began their careers here.
