Norman

Norman is a county seat in Cleveland County, Oklahoma, located south of Oklahoma City. The University of Oklahoma campus occupies a large portion of the city, blending with residential areas and commercial zones.

The city formed during the Land Run of 1889, when settlers rushed into the Unassigned Territory to claim parcels of land. The university opened in 1890 and has shaped the city's development ever since.

The name honors Abner Norman, a land surveyor who worked in the region during the early settlement period. The University of Oklahoma shapes much of the city's daily rhythm, with students and faculty visible throughout neighborhoods and downtown.

The city sits about 30 minutes south of Oklahoma City and connects through several major highways. Downtown and the campus area are walkable, while outer neighborhoods are easier to reach by car.

The city hosts the National Severe Storms Laboratory and Storm Prediction Center, where researchers study weather patterns. Visitors can view exhibits about tornadoes and severe weather that affect the region regularly.
