OU-PRIME, Research radar facility in Norman, United States
OU-PRIME was a weather radar facility located on the University of Oklahoma Research Campus in Norman, equipped with technology that measured different types of rainfall. The system could gather detailed information about clouds and precipitation to help understand weather patterns.
The facility was completed in 2009 after approximately ten months of construction and began collecting data right away. It was damaged by lightning in 2012 and could not be repaired.
The facility served as a hands-on learning center for meteorology students and researchers at the University of Oklahoma who gained practical experience with advanced weather observation. Visitors and students could witness how scientific work in atmospheric research actually took place.
The site was located on a university campus and was primarily accessible for research purposes rather than as a regular public attraction. Visits were typically connected to academic interest in meteorology or radar science.
The system was more sensitive than standard weather observation systems used at other locations and could detect clouds with greater accuracy. This improved detection capability allowed researchers to study subtle patterns in the atmosphere.
