Talimena State Park is a nature area in the Ouachita Mountains that marks the Oklahoma entrance to the Talimena Scenic Drive. The grounds feature walking paths through forested hills with overlooks along the mountain route.
The area follows ancient paths where Native Americans and early settlers crossed the Ouachita Mountains and shaped the region. These routes later became the foundation for the modern drive, now known as the Scenic Drive.
The park marks the western trailhead of the 223-mile Ouachita National Recreation Trail, which runs through the Ouachita Mountains to Pinnacle Mountain State Park west of Little Rock, Arkansas. Hikers setting off from here follow the same ridge route across two states.
The park sits about 7 miles (11 km) north of Talihina on the Oklahoma end of the Talimena Scenic Drive, with the Ouachita National Recreation Trail starting here. Camping is available for tents and RVs. The grounds lie at roughly 309 metres, and the surrounding hills rise to about 525 metres within 2 km.
The location sits along the path of a rare celestial alignment where the sun and moon fully overlap and cast a shadow across the land. This is an event most visitors do not expect when first arriving at the site.
