Southern Hills Country Club, Private golf course in Tulsa, United States
Southern Hills Country Club is a private golf facility in Tulsa with a course that spreads across hilly terrain. Perry Maxwell designed the 18 holes with elevation changes and sand bunkers placed at strategic points.
The club was founded in 1935 during the Great Depression on land donated by oil magnate Waite Phillips. The first golf round took place in May 1936, just months after the facility was completed.
The name comes from the location south of downtown, and the grounds are used by members from business and sports circles. Professional-level golf tournaments take place here regularly, with the facility also serving as a meeting point for business connections.
The facility offers tee positions between 1.57 and 2.28 kilometers in length (5,145 to 7,481 yards), with starting times that must be booked in advance. Access is restricted to members and their guests.
Gil Hanse completed a major renovation in 2019 that restored some of Maxwell's original design elements. The course has hosted eight major championships, including multiple PGA Championships and U.S. Opens.
