Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness Area is a natural space in Tulsa offering more than 40 kilometers of walking paths and covering around 40 square kilometers. The landscape features elevation changes of about 90 meters throughout its terrain along the Arkansas River.
The area was established in 1978 when an initial parcel was purchased through combined funding from Tulsa County, federal sources, and private donations. It has undergone several expansions since its founding to reach its current size.
The National Park Service designated the Turkey Mountain trails as part of the National Recreation Trail system, recognizing their recreational importance.
The area has four marked routes in varying difficulty levels, with some options being especially accessible for newcomers. Visitors should know that the terrain is variable and sturdy footwear is recommended.
Sandstone formations near the river contain markings whose origin is debated among visitors. Some see them as ancient signs while others attribute them to more recent human activity.
