McAlester, County seat in Pittsburg County, Oklahoma, United States

Located at the intersection of the California Road and Texas Road, McAlester stands 224 meters above sea level in southeastern Oklahoma.

The settlement began in 1872 when James Jackson McAlester established a trading post near coal deposits after marrying into the Chickasaw Nation.

The Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester conducted regular prison rodeos that received national television coverage through ESPN's SportsCenter broadcasts.

The McAlester Army Ammunition Plant manufactures military ordinance and employs numerous residents through the Defense Ammunition Center facility.

The city formed from the merger of North McAlester and South McAlester in 1907, reaching a population of 8,144 at Oklahoma statehood.
