McAlester, County seat in Pittsburg County, Oklahoma, United States
McAlester is a city in Pittsburg County in southeastern Oklahoma that developed along important trade routes. The settlement expanded around coal resources and continues to be shaped by a major military ammunition manufacturing facility that operates there.
The settlement began in 1872 when James Jackson McAlester established a trading post near coal deposits after marrying into the Chickasaw Nation. Two separate communities merged in 1907 to form the unified city that exists today.
The prison rodeos held here attracted visitors from across the region and became a distinctive local tradition that reflected the area's character. These events drew national attention and helped define what made this place different from other Oklahoma towns.
The city sits at the intersection of major roads, making it easily accessible from different directions with multiple route options. Visitors will find accommodations and services available throughout the area to support their stay.
The city was formed when two rival communities, North and South, merged into a single municipality after existing separately for years. This joining of forces created a larger settlement that soon became more influential in the region.
