Chandler Armory, Art Deco military building in Chandler, Oklahoma.
Chandler Armory is a 1930s military building constructed with red sandstone and featuring a curved barrel roof. Inside are gun bays, offices, classrooms, and a wooden-floored drill hall that now serves as an interpretive center for visitors.
The building was constructed between 1935 and 1937 through a federal employment program and originally housed Battery F of the Oklahoma National Guard. It remained a military facility until 1971 before being transformed into a public center.
The building shows how the community preserves and shares its Route 66 story with visitors. The spaces reveal how this famous road shaped local identity and brought change to the area.
The site features audio and video displays that show Route 66 history, including reconstructed hotel rooms with screens showing historical content. Plan to spend time exploring the exhibition at a comfortable pace and visiting the different rooms.
The facility contains Oklahoma's only brick outhouse, still featuring its original French plumbing fixtures from construction. This unusual structure showcases the building quality and craftsmanship typical of 1930s construction.
