Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art, Art museum in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
The Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art is an art museum in Shawnee that houses more than 3,500 artifacts from different parts of the world. The collection spans about 8,000 years of human history, from ancient civilizations to European modern works.
Benedictine monk Father Gregory Gerrer founded the museum in 1919 after traveling widely through Europe, Africa, and South America to collect art. His passion for gathering objects from different continents shaped what the museum became.
The museum displays Egyptian mummies, Greek sculptures, Roman artifacts, Native American objects, African ceremonial items, and European paintings from different periods. These works show how various cultures expressed themselves through art across centuries.
The museum is located on West MacArthur Street and maintains regular hours throughout the week, including weekend visits. Plan to spend a few hours walking through the various galleries to see the diverse collections on display.
The museum holds Oklahoma's only Egyptian mummy, called Tutu from 332 BCE. Researchers performed CT scans in 2015 that revealed well-preserved internal organs, offering insights into ancient burial practices.
