Petit Musée de la Récade, Contemporary art museum in Abomey-Calavi, Benin.
The Petit Musée de la Récade houses a collection of royal scepters and ceremonial objects from the ancient Dahomey kingdom. The pieces come partly from European private collections and are displayed within the Cultural Space Le Centre.
The museum was founded in 2015 and initially brought together about 40 traditional scepters. Its founders came from the French antiques trade and built the collection through European donations.
The récade were royal insignia in the Fon kingdom and appear here as powerful symbols of authority. Visitors can see how these objects remain connected to ceremonial life and local traditions today.
The museum is located within the Cultural Center Le Centre and welcomes visitors throughout the year. It is best to inquire beforehand since the venue regularly hosts workshops and cultural events alongside exhibitions.
Beyond the historical pieces, the collection features contemporary interpretations by artists such as Aston and Richard Korbiah. These modern works create a bridge between the royal past and today's artistic practice.
