Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Bridge, Road bridge in Brunei-Muara District, Brunei
Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Bridge is a road crossing in Brunei-Muara District that stretches 30 kilometers over Brunei Bay, linking the mainland to Temburong District through a dual-lane highway system. The roadway runs several meters above the water, offering views of the bay and surrounding mangrove coastline from inside vehicles.
Work on this infrastructure project started in 2014 and finished in 2019, representing an investment of 1.6 billion Brunei dollars. The completion ended decades of reliance on water taxis and long detours through neighboring Malaysia for trips between the two districts.
Local families now travel freely between the two parts of the country for weekend visits and gatherings, something that required careful planning before this connection existed. The name honors a ruler who saw the value of bringing distant communities closer together through modern infrastructure.
Crossing the bay now takes around 15 minutes by car, compared to 45 minutes by water taxi that travelers used before this route opened. The roadway stays open all day and night for vehicles, and the lanes offer clear markings for easy navigation.
Engineers installed lighting that changes colors for different occasions while keeping the fixtures above driver sight lines so they do not interfere with safe travel. The lights glow at night along the entire length, creating a visible marker from the shores on both sides of the bay.
