Centre de promotion de l'artisanat de Cotonou, Artisan market near Bourse du Travail, Cotonou, Benin
The Artisan Center of Cotonou is a marketplace displaying handcrafted items such as bronze sculptures, wooden masks, leather goods, and traditional musical instruments. The space brings together working artisans at their individual stalls throughout the site.
The center originally operated at a different location until December 2021, when artisans relocated to their current site along the railway tracks opposite the Bourse du Travail. This move reorganized how the marketplace functions today.
Craftspeople from across Benin work here, maintaining traditions in metalworking, woodcarving, pottery, and textile creation. You can watch them practice these techniques and understand how they pass knowledge down through their families.
The market is open daily and visitors can negotiate prices directly with artisans who work on-site. Daytime visits are best if you want to see the craftspeople actively creating their pieces.
Artisans work directly at their stalls, demonstrating how bronze is cast, wood is carved, and traditional instruments are made in front of visitors. These live demonstrations reveal skills that visitors rarely see elsewhere.
