Baie de Loango, Coastal bay in Kouilou Department, Republic of Congo.
Baie de Loango is a bay on the Atlantic coast of the Republic of Congo, located south of Pointe-Noire in the Kouilou Department. Its shoreline shifts between sandy beaches and mangrove zones, and the shallow coastal waters support a wide range of marine life.
The bay served as a key port during the Kingdom of Loango, which controlled much of this coastline from the 15th century onward. Through this shore, Atlantic trade routes connected with inland caravan paths leading deeper into central Africa.
Fishing remains a daily activity along the bay, and small wooden boats pulled up on the sand are a common sight. The catches are often sold directly on the shore, making the waterfront a natural meeting point for local communities.
The bay is accessible from Pointe-Noire, but some stretches of coastline require travel on unpaved roads. Parts of the area fall under environmental protection, so checking access rules with local authorities before visiting is a good idea.
Sea turtles return every year to nest on the beaches of this bay, making it one of the few active nesting sites along the Congolese coast. These arrivals happen seasonally and can sometimes be observed from the quieter stretches of shoreline.
