Kisantu Botanical garden, Botanical garden in Kisantu, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Kisantu Botanical garden is a 225-hectare site containing more than 3000 plant species, many from the Congo region alongside plants from elsewhere. Walking paths wind through distinct plant sections and follow the Inkisi River that borders the property.

The garden was established as a research facility and belongs to the Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation. During the 1990s, armed conflict caused significant damage to the site, though recovery efforts followed.

The garden serves as a meeting place where researchers and students work together on understanding plants and their protection. Visitors can observe this work firsthand and see how local plant knowledge is being preserved and studied.

The site is located about 130 kilometers from Kinshasa along the road to Matadi and offers basic overnight accommodation. Visitors can stay in shared dormitory spaces or private rooms if they need more time to explore the grounds.

The garden is home to several ancient trees that have stood on the grounds since its founding. These old specimens draw visitors who come to see their massive size and remarkable age firsthand.
