Larnaca International Airport, International airport in Larnaca, Cyprus
Larnaca International Airport is the main commercial airport of Cyprus on the southern coast near the city of the same name. The terminal has two levels for arrivals and departures with shops, cafés and waiting areas spread across several halls.
The airport opened in 1975 after the political situation had closed the former main airport near Nicosia. Since then it has remained the main hub for air traffic on the island.
The airport connects Cyprus to the eastern Mediterranean and brings together travelers from Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Greek, Turkish, English and many other languages can be heard in the arrival halls, reflecting the international character of the island.
Larnaca city center lies a few kilometers to the north and can be reached by buses, taxis or shuttles from the terminal exit. Taxi ranks and bus stops with regular connections are located in front of the building.
The runway runs almost near the sea, so passengers on approach or takeoff can often see the Mediterranean directly below the plane. The low elevation above sea level also means that during strong winds salt and moisture from the sea are sometimes carried all the way to the terminal.
