Church of Saint Lazarus, Larnaca, Byzantine Orthodox church in Larnaca, Cyprus

The Church of Saint Lazarus is a Byzantine structure built from limestone blocks with three interior aisles supported by paired columns. The building displays semicircular apses both inside and outside, representing the architectural traditions of the period.

A Byzantine emperor commissioned this church in the late antique period to protect the tomb of Lazarus, an early bishop of the ancient city of Kition. The building became a significant religious landmark that shaped the spiritual life of the region for centuries to come.

The church has served for centuries as a place of pilgrimage for Orthodox believers who come to venerate the remains of Saint Lazarus beneath the altar. The religious objects and icons displayed here reflect how deeply this location is woven into local faith and tradition.

The church is open to visitors daily, with opening times that vary by season. It is best to check the current schedule before your visit, as hours differ between summer and winter months.

Excavation work beneath the altar uncovered human remains identified as fragments belonging to Saint Lazarus himself. This discovery confirmed the spiritual importance of the location and deepened its significance for believers and visitors.
