Kykkos Monastery, Orthodox monastery in Troodos Mountains, Cyprus
The religious complex stands at 1183 meters elevation, featuring a central church structure with white stone walls and red-tiled roofs.
Emperor Alexios I Komnenos established the monastery in 1001 following reported divine visions and acquired an important icon from Constantinople.
The monastery contains an icon of Virgin Mary, traditionally attributed to Saint Luke, covered by a protective veil since the 17th century.
Visitors need to follow a strict dress code and obtain permission from the monks to enter certain areas of the monastery.
The first president of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios III, began his religious path as a monk at this monastery in 1926.
