Polis, municipality of Paphos District, Republic of Cyprus

Polis is a small town in northwest Cyprus situated near the coast, distinguished by quiet streets lined with old stone buildings and narrow winding paths. A central stone square forms its heart, with views of green hills and the Bay of Chrysochous, while Latchi, a nearby fishing village with waterfront tavernas, lies just next door.

The town originated as a simple fishing village with ancient roots, and remains of early settlements are still visible in the area. Its role as a harbor for maritime trade and fishing has persisted through the centuries and continues to shape the character of the place through traditional boats and daily waterfront activity.

The name Polis derives from ancient Greek tradition, and this heritage remains visible in the town's layout and community gatherings. Locals and visitors gather regularly in the central square and tavernas to share meals, with traditional Cypriot dishes prepared from fresh ingredients and live music creating a social rhythm on weekends.

The town is easily reached from Paphos by bus, but renting a car or bicycle makes it ideal for exploring the surrounding villages, countryside, and beaches. Nearby beaches are accessible by walking or short drives, and modest hotels and guesthouses provide accommodation for those planning longer stays.

The surrounding Akamas National Park contains wild, unspoiled landscapes with rare plants and wildlife found nowhere else on Cyprus. Guided tours are recommended as narrow dirt roads wind through these protected areas, allowing exploration while preserving the natural environment.
