Koněprusy Caves, Limestone cave system in Central Bohemia, Czech Republic.
Koněprusy Caves is a limestone cave system extending through three levels and reaching depths of 70 meters beneath Zlatý kůň Hill. The overall system spans about 2 kilometers, with approximately 620 meters open to visitors.
Workers discovered the entrance by chance during a controlled quarry blast in 1950. The caves opened to the public in 1959.
The upper section contains remains of a medieval workshop where counterfeits were secretly produced in the 15th century. This hidden operation shows how people used remote spaces to conduct illegal economic activities away from authorities.
The temperature inside remains constant at about 10.5°C year-round, so warm clothing is advisable. Guided tours last about one hour and lead through the accessible section.
The caves contain formations called Koněprusy roses that formed over a million years ago when the region had a tropical climate. These stunning mineral structures developed under conditions that no longer exist anywhere in this area today.
