South Nias Regency

South Nias Regency is an administrative region in North Sumatra that encompasses the southern portion of Nias Island and a cluster of smaller islands forming an archipelago. The territory spans around 2,500 square kilometers and combines coastal areas with interior highlands.

The regency was created in 2003 through an administrative division that separated it from the original Nias Regency to better serve its population. This reorganization acknowledged the distinct needs of the southern island communities.

The inhabited areas of South Nias display craftsmanship rooted in wood carving and local ceremonies that remain part of community gatherings. These traditions reflect how people here maintain connections to their past through everyday creative practices.

Visitors arrive via regional flights to nearby airports and continue by ground transportation to reach destinations throughout the region. Travel is easiest during drier months when road conditions are most reliable.
