Kuwait International Airport, International airport in Al Farwaniyah Governorate, Kuwait
Kuwait International Airport is the main airport in Al Farwaniyah in Farwaniyah Governorate and covers an area of around 38 square kilometers. Two parallel runways with lengths of approximately 3.4 and 3.5 kilometers enable regular operations of large commercial aircraft.
The facility began operations in 1927 as a refueling station for British aircraft on the route to India. Over the following decades the site developed into the country's most important air traffic hub and was expanded with new terminals after 1979.
The passenger halls show the legacy of Japanese architect Kenzo Tange through visible concrete construction and recurring geometric forms. This design from the late 1970s continues to shape the appearance of the facility and connects functionality with the architectural thinking of that time.
Terminal 5 serves Jazeera Airways flights while Terminal 4 handles Kuwait Airways connections. Each terminal has its own customs areas, baggage claim belts and security checks, so travelers should allow enough time for the processes.
In February 1991 a tank battle between Iraqi units and American special forces took place on the airport grounds. This event during the Gulf War marked a turning point in the recapture of the facility by coalition forces.
