Kuwait Zoo, Urban zoo in Omariya, Kuwait
Kuwait Zoo is a zoo in the Omariya district of Kuwait City, with separate sections for mammals, birds, reptiles, and other animals from around the world. The grounds are spread across a large open area with shaded rest spots and walking paths that connect the different animal enclosures.
The zoo opened in 1968, making it one of the first public leisure facilities of its kind in Kuwait. It was badly damaged during the 1990 invasion and reopened in 1993 after a full rebuilding effort.
The Kuwait Zoo draws families on weekends and public holidays, making it one of the busiest gathering spots in the capital. Children who grow up visiting the zoo often see animals from Africa and Asia for the first time here.
The grounds are large enough that comfortable shoes and plenty of water are important, particularly in the hotter months when temperatures can be high. Visiting in the early morning or late afternoon makes the walk between enclosures much more comfortable.
The zoo runs a specialized veterinary center that treats not only its own animals but also injured or sick wildlife brought in from across the region. This makes it one of the few places in Kuwait where wild animals receive dedicated medical care.
