Schalun Castle, Castle ruins in Vaduz, Liechtenstein
Schalun Castle stands northeast of Vaduz at 864 meters (2,835 feet) elevation in a mountainous setting. The ruins preserve sections of its main hall and defensive tower, nestled among rocky terrain and forest.
Construction began in the late 12th century, with Knight Ulrich von Schalun first mentioned in written records in 1237. The fortress underwent expansions over time before eventually being destroyed by fire.
The name "Schalun" reflects local geographical features and regional traditions from medieval times. Today, visitors can observe how the remaining structures once formed a cohesive defensive settlement.
The ruins are accessible via local footpaths suitable for walking and mountain biking year-round. Sturdy footwear and some physical preparation help, as the terrain is mountainous with uneven ground.
Archaeological work between 1982 and 1993 revealed that the castle underwent multiple phases of expansion with additional walls added over time. These excavations provided important details about how the structure evolved throughout its occupation.
