Buchanan, Seaport in Grand Bassa County, Liberia
Buchanan is a seaport in Grand Bassa County on the Atlantic coast, located roughly 110 kilometers (70 miles) southeast of Monrovia. The city has a deep-water harbor and connects through an extensive railway system to iron ore mines inland.
The settlement began in 1832 as Port Cresson, founded by Black Quakers from New York and Pennsylvania, but was later destroyed and rebuilt as Bassa Cove. This pattern of destruction and renewal shaped the city's development over time.
The local population speaks English and Bassa languages, with traditional fishing methods deeply rooted in daily economic and social life. These practices shape how people interact with the port and coastal environment.
Visitors should expect humid tropical weather and active port operations with regular shipping and ore handling activity. Allow time to explore the waterfront and port areas while checking local conditions before visiting.
The city is home to Africa's first iron ore washing and pelletizing facility, established in 1968 as a turning point in West African industrial development. This plant processed ore from inland mines and transformed the port into a major raw material processing center for the region.
