Grand Bassa County is an administrative region on Liberia's Atlantic coast, situated southeast of Monrovia. The area comprises forests, wetlands, and coastal zones that extend from the capital region toward the ocean.
The county was established in 1833 as one of Liberia's first three administrative divisions. Its development began with the arrival of Black Quakers from the eastern United States who settled the Port Cresson colony.
Local communities practice traditional dances and music that form part of everyday celebrations and gatherings. These art forms connect residents to their heritage and are visible during festivals and social events throughout the area.
Buchanan, the capital, serves as the main entry point for visitors and provides accommodation options alongside the second largest port in the country. From here, travelers can access the coastline and explore nearby natural areas.
An ecolodge at Bassa Point provides access to remote beaches where bird watching is possible along the Saint John River. This location offers a chance to observe coastal bird species in their natural setting.
