Bomi County, Administrative region in northwestern Liberia
Bomi County is an administrative region in northwestern Liberia characterized by rolling hills, river systems, and areas where mining activities have historically taken place. The territory lies between Grand Cape Mount and Montserrado counties and includes multiple settlements across its landscape.
The region was separated from Montserrado County in 1983 to establish itself as an independent administrative division with Tubmanburg serving as its capital. This separation marked the creation of the county as it exists today.
Multiple ethnic groups such as Gola, Dei, Mandinka, and Kpelle communities live throughout the county and continue to speak their own languages and practice their customs. You can see this cultural diversity reflected in how people in different areas organize their daily lives and social gatherings.
The region is primarily supported by agriculture, with residents cultivating cassava, sweet potatoes, and rice as main livelihood sources. Plan your visit during the dry season when roads are more passable and the landscape is easier to navigate and explore.
Blue Lake was formed from a former iron ore mining pit and stands out with its deep blue water against the mountainous surroundings. The lake came into being after mining operations ceased and water gradually filled the excavated area, creating an unexpected natural feature.
