Lofa County, Administrative county in northern Liberia
Lofa County is an administrative region in northern Liberia with varied terrain ranging from low plains to hilly areas and mountain ranges. The landscape transitions from flatter western sections toward higher elevations near the eastern border.
The region was established as an administrative division in 1964 and underwent a major territorial change in 2001 when part of it separated to form a neighboring county. This administrative shift reflected changing governance needs in the country.
Multiple ethnic communities live across the region, each maintaining distinct languages and customs that shape local celebrations and daily interactions. These cultural groups coexist and create the social fabric visible in towns and villages.
The area is most accessible during the dry season when roads are better passable and travel is easier to manage. Visitors should prepare for limited services and basic accommodation options throughout the region.
The country's highest mountain stands within the region and overlooks several proposed protected nature reserves. These largely unspoiled natural areas remain largely undeveloped and retain their wild character.
