Robertsport, Coastal settlement in Grand Cape Mount County, Liberia

Robertsport sits on a peninsula between Lake Piso lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean, with long sandy beaches and traditional fishing boats anchored nearby. The town occupies a narrow strip of land where water surrounds daily life on nearly all sides.

Portuguese navigator Pedro de Sintra reached this coast in 1461, opening the region to European trade connections. This initial contact set in motion centuries of outside engagement with the area.

The Vai people shape daily life here, and their fishing traditions are visible along the waterfront where families gather and work. These practices form the social fabric of the community, connecting residents to the sea and to each other.

Visitors can rent and take surfboard lessons at the local Surf Club, situated near several small guesthouses along the beach. Planning ahead is helpful since facilities are limited in this small coastal settlement.

A historic cottonwood tree carved by freed American slaves in 1829 still stands on the beach with marks from their journey. The carvings on the wood tell a story of arrival from Norfolk and serve as a quiet reminder of this chapter.
