Rötspitze, Alpine summit in Hohe Tauern, Austria and Italy
The Rötspitze mountain rises to 3,496 meters above sea level, forming a natural border between East Tyrol in Austria and South Tyrol in Italy.
The mountain received its first documented climb on August 22, 1854, marking the beginning of recorded mountaineering activities in this section of the Hohe Tauern.
The mountain carries two names reflecting its location between language regions: Rötspitze in German-speaking areas and Pizzo Rosso in Italian-speaking territories.
Climbers access the mountain through three main towns: Prägraten am Großvenediger, Sankt Jakob in Defereggen, and Prettau, with optimal climbing conditions from June to September.
The mountain stands as part of the Venediger Group with a prominence of 653 meters, creating distinct geographical features visible from multiple Alpine valleys.
