Wechsel, Mountain range between Styria and Lower Austria.
Wechsel is a mountain range between Styria and Lower Austria with several peaks above 1,700 meters, topped by Hochwechsel at its highest point. The group spans about 15 kilometers and features various hiking trails that wind through deciduous forests and open alpine meadows.
The mountain range formed during the Permian and Triassic periods roughly 300 million years ago from various rock types. Limestone, quartzite, and arkose slate make up the geological foundation of the range today.
The mountain range marks a boundary between the southeastern Styrian highlands and the fruit-growing hills of Lower Austria. Walkers use the trails here to move between both regions while experiencing how the landscape changes character on each side.
The Wetterkoglerhaus mountain hut offers accommodation and meals from May through November for hikers. Visitors should bring weatherproof clothing and sturdy footwear, as the terrain can quickly become exposed.
On clear days, visitors can see four distinct mountain landscapes from the summits stretching toward Semmering, Rax, and Schneeberg. On particularly good days, even Hungary and Slovenia beyond the borders become visible.
