The Renaissance Revival building houses a main auditorium with 1,709 seats and features ornate marble halls decorated with statues and paintings throughout its corridors.

Opening on May 25, 1869, with Mozart's Don Giovanni, the opera house required reconstruction after substantial damage from World War II bombing in March 1945.
