Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Winter sports resort in Zell am See District, Austria.
Saalbach-Hinterglemm is a winter sports resort consisting of two linked villages in the Zell am See District at roughly 1000 meters elevation. The area features an extensive ski region with slopes spread across several connected zones.
The location first appeared in records around 1350 as Salpach and received market rights in 1489 from Archbishop Johann Beckensloer while still serving as an agricultural settlement. Its transformation into a winter sports destination happened much later during the twentieth century.
The mountain villages retain rural character in their architecture and daily rhythm, with winter sports shaping how residents and visitors use the landscape. The ski traditions visible in local buildings and public spaces reflect generations of connection to these slopes.
The resort offers equipment rental at multiple locations throughout the villages, making it easy to arrive without heavy ski gear. Shuttle services connect to nearby airports, so getting there without a car is straightforward.
The municipality hosted a major international ski competition in 1991 that drew athletes from around the world. That event marked the place as one of the region's premier winter sports centers.
