Koralm Tunnel, Railway tunnel in Styria, Austria
The Koralm Tunnel is a railway passage under the Koralpe mountain range in Styria with two parallel single-track tubes running beneath the peaks. These tubes are connected by cross-passages at intervals and create a modern rail corridor through the mountains.
This railway project developed from the need to improve connections between northern and southern Europe through the mountains. Work began in the early 2000s following extensive geological surveys to understand the rock and soil conditions.
The tunnel forms a central section of the Baltic-Adriatic railway corridor, connecting communities between northern and southern Europe through the Austrian mountains.
Visitors can explore the surroundings of the mountain area, which offers hiking trails and viewpoints across the peaks. The location is reachable from Graz and other Styrian towns, and the completed route will make travel through the region easier.
During construction, large amounts of rock were removed from the mountain and much of this material was redirected to other building projects in the region. This shows how tunnel construction creates resources for other infrastructure developments.
