Am Tivoli, Heritage residential complex in Meidling, Austria
Am Tivoli is a residential complex in Vienna's Meidling district containing 388 apartments spread across 65 buildings connected by 92 staircases. The development stretches between Hohenbergstrasse and Gruenbergstrasse with narrow streets running through it and green spaces integrated throughout.
Architect Wilhelm Peterle designed this residential development, with construction starting in 1927 and completion in 1930. The project emerged when Vienna was actively building new housing for its growing population.
The complex shows Vienna's social housing traditions with villa-style houses, front gardens, and shared facilities like kindergartens that organize daily life for residents. This design reflects the idea that housing for everyone should include green spaces and communal areas where people can gather.
The site is walkable and has multiple entry points along Hohenbergstrasse and Gruenbergstrasse where visitors can start exploring. While the many buildings and narrow streets may feel confusing at first, spending time walking through helps you understand the layout.
The name Tivoli comes from a former amusement park at this location that operated until 1967 with slides and musical performances. This lost entertainment venue left its name behind in the residential complex built on the site afterward.
