Amalienbad, Art Deco swimming complex in Favoriten, Austria.
Amalienbad is an Art Deco swimming complex in Vienna with two levels, spacious changing areas, and a central swimming hall. Throughout the building, ceramic decorations and sculptured details reflect the architectural style of that period.
The facility was built between 1918 and 1934 by the Social Democratic Workers' Party as part of the Red Vienna movement. This initiative aimed to give working-class residents access to modern leisure facilities that had previously been available only to the wealthy.
The name reflects how Vienna's socialist movement made public bathing a right for working families in the 1920s. The design shows this belief that modern comfort and good architecture belonged to everyone.
The complex is divided into separate sections for men and women and offers swimming lessons for all skill levels. There are wet and dry saunas available, making it a complete facility for different needs.
The complex features a glass dome that opens and closes within minutes, bringing natural light and fresh air into the swimming hall. This technical innovation allows the space to shift between open-air and enclosed atmosphere.
