Aggenstein

Aggenstein is a limestone mountain in the Tannheim Mountains on the border between Austria and Germany, rising to 1986 meters. Its northern face drops away steeply while the southern slopes descend more gradually and are covered with alpine meadows.

The summit developed into an important crossing between Bavaria and Tyrol during the 20th century, with the Bad Kissinger Hut established in 1929 as shelter for mountain hikers. This hut remains a central waypoint for those taking cross-border routes.

The summit cross marks the border between Germany and Austria, and on clear days visitors can see the mountain landscapes of both countries from this vantage point. This location at the border makes it a symbolic meeting place for people from both nations.

The route from Grän requires about 850 meters of elevation gain over roughly 8 kilometers, with chains securing the final ascent to the summit. Good footwear is important since the path is steep and can be slippery, especially after rain.

The summit cross has become a symbol of cross-border mountain culture over time and is regularly visited by hikers from both countries. The location shows how mountains can bring together people from different cultures at a single point.
