Central European University, Research university in Favoriten, Vienna, Austria and Budapest, Hungary
Central European University is a research institution with two sites in Vienna and Budapest offering graduate programs in social sciences, humanities, law and public policy. The facilities include modern libraries, seminar spaces and research centers designed to support interdisciplinary work across departments.
George Soros founded the institution in 1991 after the Cold War ended, aiming to support academic development across Central and Eastern Europe. The main operations moved from Budapest to Vienna in 2019 when new regulations in Hungary restricted its activities.
The campus brings together scholars and learners from more than a hundred nations who gather in seminar rooms to discuss ideas rooted in open inquiry. Academic life revolves around debate, collaboration and the exchange of perspectives shaped by different regions and experiences.
Both sites are accessible by public transit and host open lectures and academic events throughout the year. Visitors should check in advance which facilities or events are open to the public before planning a visit.
The institution holds dual accreditation from the United States and Austria, giving graduates degrees recognized in both education systems. This arrangement allows international students to move between different academic and professional contexts with greater flexibility.
