Budapest, Capital city on Danube River, Hungary
Budapest is the national capital and largest city in Hungary, lying along both banks of the Danube. The hilly Buda side shows thermal baths and wooded slopes, while Pest remains flat with wide boulevards running between multistory buildings from the 19th century.
Three separate towns merged on November 17, 1873 into a single administrative unit. The Second World War destroyed several bridges and neighborhoods that were later rebuilt.
Locals stop at corner pastry shops for chimney cake rolled fresh at outdoor stands. In the evening ruin bars fill with people sitting on mismatched furniture under strings of lights in old courtyards.
Four metro lines connect with trams and buses across the city through a shared ticketing system. Most public transit runs until midnight with night buses covering major routes afterwards.
More than 120 natural springs feed public baths with warm mineral water rising from underground every day. Some bathhouses have used the same spring water continuously since Ottoman times.
