The Hungarian State Opera House is a Renaissance Revival building located on Andrássy Avenue in Budapest's sixth district. The interior features a horseshoe-shaped auditorium with approximately 1,200 seats, decorated with frescoes, sculptures, and ornate details created by Hungarian artists.
The building was designed by Miklós Ybl and opened in 1884 with Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria-Hungary attending the inauguration. It became one of the main venues for opera and ballet performances in Central Europe.
The house hosts the Budapest Opera Ball, a society event held since 1886. Its season runs from September to the end of June, and the Hungarian National Ballet performs here alongside the opera company. Statues of Ferenc Erkel, who composed the national anthem and was the first music director, and Franz Liszt stand in front of the building.
Visitors can take guided tours through the building to see the architectural details, ceiling paintings, and artistic decorations up close. It's best to check ahead about tour availability, as these may vary depending on scheduled performances.
The auditorium's horseshoe form was measured in the 1970s by an international team of engineers, who ranked its acoustics third in Europe, after La Scala in Milan and the Palais Garnier in Paris. The bronze chandelier above the hall weighs 3,050 kg and lights Károly Lotz's fresco of the Greek gods on Olympus.
