Johannes Kepler University Linz is a public university in Austria located in the northeast part of the city across a large campus with modern buildings, green areas, and a central pond. The campus includes faculties of social sciences and business, engineering, law, and medicine with multiple institutes, lecture halls, libraries, computer labs, and cafes.
The university was founded in 1966 as a college for social sciences, economics, and business, and was officially established as a university in 1975. It was named after Johannes Kepler, the astronomer who lived in Linz and wrote The Harmony of the World while residing here.
The university is a place where students relax between classes, work outdoors, or meet friends in common areas. The campus pond and green spaces shape daily life and create natural gathering spots where people from different fields of study connect.
The university is easy to reach by tram, bus, or car, with trams running every few minutes and taking about 16 minutes to reach the city center. Several student dormitories are within walking distance, such as Julius Raab Heim and Kepler Heim, housing more than 3,100 students.
The university was the first in Austria to issue digital ID cards to students in 1998, a pioneering move for that era. It also houses a mathematics institute that is part of Austria's national research organization and works on cutting-edge projects.
