Benediktinerpropstei Sankt Gerold, Benedictine monastery in Sankt Gerold, Austria
Benediktinerpropstei Sankt Gerold is a monastery complex with a baroque church, a chapel, and an underground chamber, set in a valley in the Vorarlberg Alps. The buildings are grouped around an open courtyard and surrounded by meadows and forest.
The site traces its origins to the 10th century, when Saint Gerold settled here as a hermit and gave the place its name. It later grew into a working Benedictine community before being converted into a retreat and religious education center in 1958.
The church holds several organs built by skilled craftsmen, and they can be heard during services and concerts held throughout the year. Visitors who time their visit around one of these events get a very different sense of the space.
The complex sits in a remote alpine valley, so arriving by car is the most practical option for most visitors. Overnight stays are possible on site, and there is a restaurant serving food, which makes a longer visit easier to plan.
A path through the monastery forest leads to a labyrinth and a series of sensory stations that visitors can walk through at their own pace. This trail was added in recent decades and has no direct connection to the monastic tradition of the site.
