Gruppo del Walser, Mountain range in Vorarlberg, Austria
The Walser Group is an alpine subgroup located in the Bregenz Forest Mountains between the Walgau valley and the Lower Grosswalsertal. The ridge features a mix of grassy pastures on the southern side and rocky, forested slopes facing north.
This alpine range formed during the Cretaceous period as part of the Rhenodanubian Flysch geological zone, creating its distinctive limestone structures. The geological processes shaped the ridge into the landscape visitors see today.
The mountain range lies within the traditional settlement area of the Walser people, who established multiple villages along its southern slopes.
Visitors can follow numerous hiking trails crossing the ridge with varying difficulty levels to suit different abilities. Mountain huts and alpine farms along the route provide rest stops and overnight options for multi-day journeys.
The southern slopes drop sharply about 1000 meters and remain grass-covered despite the steep angle, creating a striking contrast with the jagged cliffs on the north side. This dramatic difference in terrain character makes the ridge distinctive among nearby mountain ranges.
